What the heck is a blog anyway?

The free encyclopedia, Wikipedia, defines a blog as follows:

A weblog, which is usually shortened to blog, is a type of website where entries are made (such as in a journal or diary), displayed in a reverse chronological order.

Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Most blogs are primarily textual although many focus on photograph (photoblog), videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting).

The word blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Another way to think of a blog is as a "content management system" – a way to organize information in categories of interest to the readers, and that is searchable.

Writing a blog entry is called "posting" to the blog. Many blogs permit and encourage readers to contribute their own knowledge, insights or opinions in the form of "comments" – so look for that feature as well. This enables knowledge to be leveraged and shared, with a community of like-minded colleagues.

With The Entrepreneurial MD Blog, I will be bringing you, my reader, regular newsworthy items, resources, opinions, tips, advice, insights and reflections. If you want to keep up with my blog posts, there are a couple of ways to do this.

Question: How do I know when you have written a new "blog posting" or article?

  1. You can subscribe to an "RSS Feed" - read here for a great step-by-step article on how to subscribe to an RSS feed. Once you have selected your preferred feedreader, you can take the steps listed in # 2 below to add feeds from The Entrepreneurial MD Blog.

As an FYI, I use My Yahoo as I find it easy to add feeds for those blogs that don’t offer option #3.

  2. You can click on the orange button on the Home Page that is labeled "Click button to subscribe to my feed" and it will take you to a web page that offers you multiple feedreaders such as My Yahoo, NewsGator Online, Sage, Safari, NetNewsWire, Pluck, Bloglines etc. Just click on your preferred feed reader button (or select it from the drop down bar if your button isn’t there) and you will be taken through the steps to add the blog URL to your webpage.

You will need to visit your feedreader webpage regularly to remain updated with the latest posts.

  3. You can sign up in the FeedBlitz sign up box (where it says "Subscribe Me"), by entering your email address. You will receive an email notifying you every time I post a new entry. You will need to confirm your subscription and ensure that your spam filter is set to permit this email to be forwarded to your Inbox.

Hot Tip #1:

Here is an explanation for the audio-visually inclined who can handle a cheesy and fun explanation!

Hot Tip #2:

If you prefer to receive an email with updated blog posts and cannot find an email sign-up box for a feed, read this article on how to get Feedblitz to send you an email version of all blog post updates anyway.
