The physician who appealed to Apple
Monday, August 11, 2008 at 11:10AM
Here's a great little story I read today that highlighted many of the traits of an physician leader-in-the-making (probably an entrepreneur too):
Dr Steven Chang used the following skills to get Steve Jobs of Apple to open the closely guarded iPhone gates and allow Epocrates to integrate its application with those of the iPhone:
- Tenacity - he didn't give up
- Ingenuity - he knew it would take more than his own passion to reach the ears of the Big Kahuna, so he created a way for others to add their own voices to the clamor.
- Technology - he built a web page to collect signatures for his petition
- Persuasion - he got others to see past their victimized apathy and to take action i.e. sign a petition. In fact, it seems he unleashed a torrent of opinion.
- A belief that his idea mattered - nothing else need be added
- Risk-taking for the greater good - this was clearly self-serving, but I bet Dr Chang knew that others had the same needs. hence his willingness to get their signatures and comments.
- Style - it takes quite a bit of class to hand-deliver
"...the bound, 30-page petition (addressed to chief executive Steve Jobs) to Apple's Cupertino headquarters."
The iPhone just got better. Good job, Dr. Chang.
Sometimes our best ideas originate in our frustrations.
What did this story make you realize might be possible?
